Archaeological Dig

Archaeological Dig

To connect to our current unit of inquiry; where we are in place and time, we went on an archaeological dig in the early years sand pit. Due to practises for the wind concert Alisha, Kaelyn, Annika, Milly and I missed the dig with our class but ended up going at the end of the day with 5Ma. We got into groups of 4 or 5. I was in a group with Matilda, Lily and Selena. When we got to the early years playground, we saw the sand pit and noticed it was organised into a grid.

My group split up into different sections and got 1㎡ by 1㎡. We were digging to find 11 ancient artifacts that were left behind. 20 minutes into the dig and one of the groups found something interesting. It was 2 plates tied together. A little while after they found the plates Matilda hit something hard with her shovel. My entire group rushed into her square to help her dig it out. We dug until we saw something dark. We tried to find the edges of it but we couldn’t find it as it went into another person’s square. We later found out it was a plank holding the sand pit together. I changed to another square since I hadn’t found anything in the one I was in. I was digging out the corners of the square when I saw something brown. I called over my group and told them to bring their brushes with them. We brushed off the excess sand and found out I had found an oil lamp! Later on in the dig, Selena found a mask which we helped dig up since she couldn’t get it out.

I thought this was a great idea because you would normally only see people do it over and over again and this gave us an opportunity to actually try and do it for ourselves. Although we had so much fun we had to be responsible and principled since we were in sand and it wasn’t our playground. We ended up finding most of the artifacts with 1 or 2 to spare.
