Science Reflection

Science Reflection Unit 2

In science we looked at density, mass and volume. To look at the densities of different liquids, we had 3 different liquids; oil, fresh water and syrup. We measured out 10ml of each liquid and poured them into a test tube on a retort stand. We then waited for 1-3 minutes and watched what happened to the liquids. Allegra and I were working together and we realized our 2 bottom layers didn't have a clear separate line. Our main question was: why do the liquids not mix? Well, each liquid had a different density therefore if you order them from most dense to least dense they would gently sit on top of each other! Density is the mass of the liquid/object divided by the volume of it. For every liquid we had to measure the density in advance, so we had to measure the mass with a weight scale since mass is measured in kg, and we measured the volume by pouring in 10ml of the liquid into a graduated cylinder. After you measured all the separate measurements you had to divide the volume by the mass to get the density of the object/liquid.
